A UK Exercise to Music Qualification means you can teach group classes while incorporating music into each session.
But if you’re thinking about moving in the future or are dreaming of a working holiday, it’s only natural to wonder whether you can use the qualification abroad.
In this post, we’ll explain when and where you can use your qualification, and what determines its validity.
Can I Use My UK ETM Qualification Abroad? The Short Answer
It depends on the type of qualification you have and the country you’re planning on working in. The fitness industry doesn’t have a universal authority that regulates fitness courses and qualifications, so it really depends on multiple factors.
However, if your training provider says their courses are recognised internationally, it usually means the awarding body partners with other countries or is at least recognised by them.
Or, the training provider could be a registered member of international organisations such as the European Register of Exercise Professionals (EREPS).
For reference, the Fitness Circle’s ETM Instructor course is CIMSPA-approved, which means it’s recognised in areas including the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and the UAE.
Are UK Fitness Qualifications Respected Overseas?
Again, it’s more about which UK fitness qualification you have than simply holding a certificate. Ofqual-regulated courses must meet strict standards for QA, content, and assessment.
So courses that are both CIMSPA-endorsed and Ofqual-regulated carry a lot of weight with UK employers and clients.
But there’s a difference between a course being accredited and recognised. For example, you might find a fitness training provider that offers an “accredited course”, which basically means that an external body has reviewed it for quality.
So, while the course itself meets certain criteria, that doesn’t mean both UK and international employers recognise it.
The key thing to remember here is that anyone can technically set up and register a private company, then call it an Accreditation Board. However, if other countries don’t recognise this board, you’ll have a much harder time finding work.
Working in Europe
The EREPS (European Register of Exercise Professionals) is a registry for fitness professionals working in the sector. It ensures instructors have the qualifications needed to coach others by evaluating whether fitness certifications align with European Qualifications Framework (EQF) standards.
As long as your Exercise to Music Instructor course is CIMSPA-endorsed, you can work in Europe, as both bodies have a mutual agreement in place.
This agreement means that each body accepts members from the other’s register. Put simply, European employers will recognise a CIMSPA Level 2 ETM course as a professional standard.
What About Outside of Europe?
Things get more complicated outside of Europe, as there are no universal regulations in place. For this reason, whether your qualifications are recognised depends on independent and national awarding bodies.
While you might believe that simply having a qualification is enough, the growing interest in fitness means that countries are becoming stricter about standards.
The good news is that the CIMSPA is an ICREPS (International Confederation of Registers of Exercise Professionals) member, which means that UK professionals with an endorsed qualification are recognised in countries including the USA, Ireland, Australia, and the UAE.
Important Things to Check Before Getting On a Plane
Teaching abroad is a wonderful experience, with many younger trainers choosing to enjoy working holidays before settling down.
Or maybe you want to move and continue being an ETM instructor abroad.
Factoring in the following things can simplify the process and give you clarity:
- Check Register and Licensing Requirements: Some countries have specific register and licensing requirements. Checking these in advance will help you prepare the required documentation.
- Authentication and Translation: Many employers will want to authenticate your certificate. If you’re travelling to a non-English-speaking country, they’ll also want to translate it.
- Visas and Work Permits: A recognised qualification doesn’t automatically guarantee entry to a country. You’ll also need to apply for visas and work permits.
- Insurance: Your public liability insurance may only be valid for the UK, which means you’ll need to find another policy.
While the ETM Certificate is highly respected, you might find better employment opportunities with a more advanced qualification like the Level 3 Personal Trainer Diploma.
If you’re trying to move to a country where the competition for work permits and visas is fierce, advanced courses can increase your chances of entry.
The Bottom Line
Working abroad means that you can teach clients from all backgrounds while enjoying a different way of life.
Whether you dream of lazy afternoons in Spain, want to experience epic Australia, or have plans to travel the world and work, a recognised ETM instructor certificate gives you plenty of opportunities.
Remember, the two most important things you should look for are CIMSPA endorsement and Ofqual regulation.
When you study with the Fitness Circle, you can have peace of mind that you’re gaining a valuable qualification that’s recognised in many European countries and further afield.
