So, you are thinking of making some changes to your life. Perhaps it’s got to the point where you are thinking of a career change, or you just want to immerse yourself within an industry that provides you with many health and social benefits. As a result there’s one question that has crossed your mind:

Am I too old to become a Personal Trainer?

Short Answer – No, here at The Fitness Circle we’ve seen a range of learners partake our courses from age 18 to 65. Despite the variable ages, work backgrounds and life experiences, they all have one thing in common which is that they love fitness. In this article we will discuss the average age of personal trainers, the advantages of being an older personal trainer and some general advice if you’re thinking of being a Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer.

The Average age of a Personal Trainer:

According to a survey carried out by the national Federation of Professional Trainers, 40% of them were aged between 42-60, with a few being in there 70s and 80s aswel! This might come as a surprise to you (especially the latter info) but Beverly – an 82 year old instructor who runs classes for clientele she refers to as ‘seasoned citizens’ thinks otherwise. Now when asking yourself am I too old to be a Personal Trainer, think of Beverly. What to remember is that there is only a minimum age requirement of 18 for being a Personal Trainer, no maximum.

What The Fitness Circle do understand is that it can be quite daunting entering a new career or stage of your life. It’s normal to feel apprehensive or fear being judged, so we have listed out some of these feelings below along with some food for thought.

I already have my own career

This might just be the biggest doubt when deciding to become a Personal Trainer. The good news is that you do not need to leave your job to be a Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer. You can firstly study, and once qualified, work while you are still in your current career. How? The Fitness Circle have designed their courses to be completely flexible in nature with  people’s life commitments in mind. You can learn about our Personal Trainer course more here.

Furthermore, the great thing about being a Personal Trainer is that you can choose your working hours. With the majority of people wanting PT sessions in the evenings, you can quite easily fit your sessions around your work. The great thing about our qualifications is that they are internationally recognised so you’ll be able to use them online to attract international clients and also there’s no expiry date.

I am starting too late

Again, this is a completely understandable concern for people who want to qualify as a Personal Trainer later in life. The truth is that the earlier you start in a career the more you will get out of it.

What we can guarantee you is that The Fitness Circle can offer the highest quality course, reflected by our high first-time pass rates and excellent reviews, providing you with the best support and advice during your learning.

It’s a matter of asking yourself the question – I am at this stage of my life, will I continue to live it as it is with the possible regret of not pushing myself to my limits, or attempt to fulfil my dreams?

Advantages of being an older Personal Trainer

Perceived experience – The truth is you do not need to advertise how long you have been in the industry for unless somebody asks you. People make assumptions all the time, and hopefully you can use this to your advantage as many people will assume you have been in the industry for a long time.

You are a friend as well as a trainer – A lot of people will feel more comfortable having a Personal Trainer who is as old as themselves. This might be because they do not like being told what to do by somebody younger, or simply the fact that they get on better with people closer to their age (as the majority or people do).
